It's a sad fact of life that all good things must end eventually. If you've been relying on Tesco Clubcard points to top up your Avios balance, 18 January is the last day you can do the conversion one last time before the Clubcard-to-Avios route closes for good.
For years, savvy travel hackers have been relying on the generous conversion rate of 1 Clubcard point to 2.4 Avios to grow their Avios balance. Every now and then, BA and Tesco would sweeten the deal by offering generous conversion bonuses of 50% or more.
Although we hadn't seen a conversion bonus to Avios in a while, the ongoing conversation rate was still decent. The Clubcard-to-Avios route was a simple way of turning your grocery shopping into award tickets.
Last October, a succinct BA statement announcing the end of the Tesco partnership sent shockwaves through the travel hacking community:
"The contract between Avios Group Ltd and Tesco PLC is terminating on 18 January 2021, after which British Airways Executive Club Members will no longer be able to convert their Clubcard points to Avios with Tesco."
So if you have points in your Clubcard account that you'd like to convert, act now! You have until 23:59 hrs on 18 January to exchange them for Avios.
It's not all bad news. Virgin Atlantic is about to become the exclusive airline partner of Tesco Clubcard; the Clubcard-to-Virgin points partnership continues. And the conversation rate to Virgin is actually more generous than the "old" Avios rate; 1 Clubcard point = 2.5 Virgin points.
