DECENT: my stay at the Sofitel Brussels Europe

This is my review of the Sofitel Brussels Europe.

I needed a night's accommodation in Brussels before an early morning flight. I booked my go-to hotel, the Sofitel Brussels Europe. Located in the EU quarter, it's a 30-minute walk or so to get to the Grand Place. It's also only a short 15-20 minute drive to the airport.

As I stayed on a weekend, the rate was decent, just shy of £130 (150 EUR), including breakfast for two. I have seen rooms at this property going for 400 EUR mid-week. Remember that Accor bookings earn up to 15% cashback when clicked through from TopCashback. The cashback stacks with loyalty points and status benefits earned in the Accor Live Limitless (ALL) scheme.

Check-in was just about fine. Although I had stayed here on quite a few occasions, it took the check-in agent a good ten minutes or so to pull up my reservation and hand me the room keys. Asking me twice whether this was my first stay at this property, when they clearly had already had all my details on file, didn't leave a good impression.

An ALL Gold member, I received a one-category upgrade from the 'Chambre classique' I had booked to a 'Chambre supérieure'. The main difference is that superior rooms have a separate shower and a bathtub, whereas classic rooms only feature a walk-in shower. I have never received a suite upgrade at this Sofitel, not even as a Platinum member.

The room itself is nicely appointed, decently sized and well insulated from street noise. Everything is in perfect condition. The toiletries are by Hermes. No complaints here. This property offers a turn-down service in the evening with a few nice touches. You get a piece of Belgian chocolate, bottled water and a cup of JING camomile tea in the room.

ALL elites get a voucher for a welcome drink in the hotel bar. Most Accor hotels offer their status guests soft drinks or beer. But at this Sofitel, everything on the menu is included, including cocktails and Veuve Clicquot champagne. Thumbs up here!

Though I had to check-out at 8am to make my flight, I had breakfast in the hotel. They had refurbished the breakfast restaurant since I had last stayed here in 2017. The offering is much better now and includes freshly squeezed kiwi, orange and strawberry juices, amongst others. Made-to-order eggs and Belgian waffles are also available. The quality of the food is high and the breakfast is much better in terms of quantity and quality than at other hotels, such as at 'The Hotel Brussels', where I had spent the previous three nights for a conference.

This is my go-to hotel in Brussels and I'll gladly return if the price is right!
